The fish market

Manolo picks the sardines at the auction before dawn. If the sea didn't deliver, there's no espeto. No freezer fixes that.

12:30 · Embers at 320°

The wood

Old olive wood is lit in the boat beached on the sand. It takes an hour to make the good embers — the kind with no flame, only glow.

The espeto

Six sardines per skewer, threaded by hand, always with the spine facing out. You eat them with your fingers, standing if you have to, looking at the water.

20:30 · Last light

The sunset

The last embers coincide with the last light on the water. Anyone who's watched it once from this sand comes back the next summer.

Why a boat

The fire doesn'tgo insidethe kitchen.

A beached boat filled with sand, wood stacked on top. That's how espeto has been made on this coast since before beach shacks existed. The sand insulates, the wood holds up and the smoke goes out to sea, not into the dining area.

  • Old olive wood

Only wood from pruned olive groves. No pine, no charcoal, no gas.

  • No flame

We cook over embers. Flame burns the skin and dries out the flesh.

  • A meter from the water

The fire is where it's always been: on the sand, facing the sea.

“The best espeto I've had on the coast, and I've had plenty. Just the right salt on the sardine and the embers perfectly judged. We booked a front-row table and it was worth every minute.”

“We booked a sunset table and it was unforgettable. Fresh fish straight from the boat, cooked on an actual fire in a boat on the sand. Absolutely magical.”

“I've been coming since I was a kid and nothing has changed, which is exactly what I want. Manolo still picks the fish himself. The fried fish is outrageously good.”

The last embersand the last lightfall together.

From June to September the sun sets right behind the boat. Row-one tables at that hour get booked a week ahead. It's not marketing: there are just eighteen.

Every summer the lit-up boat ends up on a thousand phones. These are our favorites.

Before you head to the beach

What everyoneasks us.

Do I need to book for sunset?+

Yes, and with room to spare. Front-row tables from July to September fill up a week ahead. Book here and we'll hold you row one while any are left.

What if the sea didn't deliver sardines?+

We message you on WhatsApp that same morning and offer the sea bream espeto or whatever fish did come in. We never serve frozen sardines — it's the one thing we won't bend on.

Do you eat on the sand or at a table?+

Both. There are 18 tables on a wooden deck in the front row and a standing bar next to the boat, where you eat the espeto straight off the embers on your feet.

Are there options without fish?+

Grilled vegetables, huevo de toro tomato salad, roasted peppers and a Spanish potato omelet from the same kitchen. It's not a vegetarian place, but you'll eat well.

What if it rains?+

We have 40 covered seats with the same view. If a storm keeps us from lighting the embers, we'll let you know and move your booking at no cost.
